2016 repress - following on almost 5 years after their first release *journey to the centre of the sun* on esp institute. 2 big excursions from a couple of very well respected heads. featuring the label’s very own tako reyenga (red light records, music from memory) and jonny nash (melody as truth, land of light) these two tracks were cut from a weekend of sprawling space-jams recorded in jonny’s north london home in 2012 and until recently were thought to be lost.

first outing from french formation bcuc - their “incantations” in zulu, sotho and english and their funky modulations extend over twenty minutes in a whirlwind of sound reminiscent of fela’s afrobeat.

“- see fee? what’s that? - just the chemical symbols for the elements carbon and iron, elijah. carbon is the basis of human life and iron of robot life. it becomes easy to speak of c/fe when you wish to express a culture that combines the best of the two on an equal but parallel basis. - see fee. do you write it with a hyphen? or how? - no, elijah. a diagonal line between the two is the accepted way. it symbolizes neither one nor the other, but a mixture of the two, without priority.” (the caves of steel, isaac asimov)

path records, old school brooklyn based leaders in underground psychedelic techno, keep up the twelve inch pressure with a brand new ep from their label-head reade truth. picking up where his recent n-syde records left off (“stares to upstairs”, “blessings of luh”), the 3 track ep abounds in sci-fi techno themes while taking root in a somewhat housier rhythmic structure. the ep begins with the dark, mysterious “omm 0910” where whispered female dialogue and a powerful bassline are combined with cut up efx, trickling liquid soundscapes and solid 909 programming.
* a bump of house* develops around a hypnotic bass line and intricate deep synths and strings, similar to earlier path releases. “drop and see” dives the tempo to 110 bpms and is a mechanical industrial/synth styled number with a clever, hypnotic progression. overall, this ep offers another vital and varied selection of tracks from truth, who is known for providing refreshing and unique ideas throughout his career, including seminal releases on labels like planet e, sonic groove and strictly rhythm. limited to 350 copies, first 200 include a 12×12 graphic insert.

in 2013, underground rap heavyweights blu and nottz teamed up for gods in the spirit, one of the years most critically adored eps. and upon its release, the duo made it clear they werent done there, but also werent about to rush their follow-up. as much as fans clamored for its release, blu and nottz earned the ability to take their time with their sophomore effort. and thats evident throughout titans in the flesh, which builds on its predecessor and proudly stands on its shoulders.

i-f, helena hauff & intergalactic gary favourite! double artist debut on bio rhythm, delivering its darkest release so far. despite all corporate techno gentrification rises mirror man, from the ashes of what once was this dirty dystopian hardcore heaven, and he s a mean motherfckr who has been battering us with his haunting dj mixes already for a while. on the flip the pleasure gets even darker with satanist west coast act leaders of the wild hunt on remix duties. the beauty of paranoia... perfect soundtrack for the summer of 2016.

ebony goes first with real truth and offers a track that is both punchy and powerful thanks to its raw and thumping drums, but spiritual and serve thanks to the pained and soul infused vocal wails up top. glistening glass pads and over sized hi hats add to the intensity of this classy rave banger. r then serves up focus, eight minutes of freaky and hypnotic techno with creepy voices moving about the space as distorted kicks and droning reverb brings a physical feel. it s intense and dark and then comes colossus, a breakbeat driven track with heavenly pads making for a grand and atmospheric headspace. cosmic signifiers and far off pads add to the serenity of it all and will leave you with both a heavy heart and a stomping foot.

following up the fantastic summer re-release of upsetting keys “empathy” ep, path records follows with its first new catalogue number since 2006. path 008 marks the return of artist fate 258, whose 1999 “why 2k” path 001 ep has been a hotly sought after item on discogs. the three-track ep contains two exciting new mixes of cult classic techno track “the path”. the a-side version “path to hell” is the harder of the pair, a dark edgy journey into the unknown with shuffling 808 rhythms providing much of the melody. “path to heaven” slows the groove down and adds warm juno pads throughout the mix for a very deep detroit flavored techno style. on the final track “heaven or hell” sort of a broken beat downtempo piece, sparse vocals and bladerunner samples mix to complete the dystopian concept. these mixes of “the path” are considered pre-mixes, as they were completed in 1998 before the original release of path 001. fate 258 is a project from brooklyn producer reade truth, known for his work over the last decades on labels such as planet e, sonic groove, n-syde, wurst and strictly rhythm to name a few. limited to 250 worldwide, with the first 100 including full black and white cover art.

a year and a half after black merlin (george thompson) opened the common thread series with the much praised new world fantasy / ice house release george sent over some adventurous bits for a follow up and we were immediately sold. george is a true artist in his own right. all of the black merlin tracks evoke different sentiments. this time around the feeling it bring up is very conflicted. both tracks have those dark aesthetics with elements of paranoia and both also share some apocalyptic elements. it is for this reason that this is the perfect follow up for ct01. instead of just releasing music on vinyl we (with the blessings of zoroaster) are looking to evoke spirits, cross boundaries and maintain quality. major cliches, but with an artist like black merlin on your books, cliches sometimes become truth.
